JM Hampshire is an English-born fiction author with a fascination for unfortunate incidents, bad timing and awkward situations (either his own or, preferably, other people’s).

Educated in England, grown in Asia, and matured in Australia, JM’s head is full of ‘what if …’ scenarios, developed largely as a foil for his own tangled situations and sometimes unfortunate luck. His understated British sense of humour, colourful life experiences and sharp eye for character observation create warm, engaging stories that are funny, real and relatable.

Having lived and worked on four continents, JM has a rich source of ideas and inspiration harvested from his experiences as an engineer, business owner, graphic designer, photographer, salesman, family man, expat and traveller.

JM is now very happily settled in Australia, with his family and dogs. He has been quietly writing fiction for over twenty years and only decided to write seriously when his wife found out, and happened upon some of his work.

Same time next year?

Ships don't always pass in the night

Jamie has to do well. Nervous, uncertain, he knows that this new job is his chance—his ticket to a future he hadn’t even imagined. Working among the techies at the annual Food and Beverage Expo in the country’s biggest convention centre, he’s captivated and enchanted by its energy, colour and buzz. The place is unlike anything he’s ever known.

He’s also captivated and enchanted by the bubbly brunette on the catering stall opposite. Vibrant and vivacious, she too is unlike anyone he’s ever known.

Despite fatherly warnings from his supervisor Chilly, Jamie and the pretty brunette hook up for a night of fun and passion. In the morning she’s gone, and it will be a whole year until the next FaB-Ex.

As darkness begins to gather at the edges of Jamie’s world, this wonderful, lively and enigmatic girl becomes a bright light to remember in his darkest moments. But will she be back at FaB-Ex again, at the same time next year?

A sweet, unique romance

This book was sweet, understated and enjoyable. What I found fascinating was that, although part of me thought there were a lot of descriptions of the minutiae of trade fairs, which ordinarily wouldn’t be my cup of tea, I also couldn’t put it down. Many times I found myself devouring chapter after chapter when I should have been asleep!

The plotting was good and I loved the way it documented many years through a small “window” of a particular event at the same time every year. The main character’s struggle with mental health is thought provoking and heartbreaking in places, and through the lens of an annual event, we watch him change over many years. The author uses clever POV to leave the reader unsure of who is who in places, which is used to good effect.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the ending a lot!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
