Science Fiction

A fast ship can only take you so far.
Patty knew she was a good pilot, and Freya, her tiny Civilian Re-entry Vehicle, fit her like a glove. She loved flying her CRV, but it was small, especially with her little brother crammed into the rear seat.

She would have to be better than a good pilot if she was able to outrun the invading aliens.

With limited resources, Patty and Alan can only travel so far. Can they escape an alien invasion?

Patty's Fight is a page-turning, swashbuckling, solar system-wide adventure you're going to love.

Good fun, quick read. Making Sci-fi great again. Nice seeing a female lead character too. Looking forward to the sequel.
Probably the best FCKing book I've read in a while. ( Sorry Craig. Had to plug it.)
Buy this. You won't be disappointed.

Clearly for a younger crowd, it would make a great graphic novel. Yet it doesn't seem to have enough of an edge to make it in the YA world.

‘Patty’s War’ concludes the exciting story that opened with ‘Patty’s Flight’.

After discovering that the invading aliens have taken Alan, her kid brother, Patty must invade the aliens’ enormous mothership if she is to retrieve him.
Patty knows she cannot win this war and does not even try. Her mad scheme will probably fail, but she needs to salvage a little self-respect.

While Patty follows her own path, she cannot help but disrupt the aliens’ invasion plans, and she discovers her little ship has propelled her into being a pivotal player in the war.

Patty must put aside her human desires, abandon her family, and truly embrace the aliens and their culture if she has any hope of ending this wasteful conflict.

While the first book is a short teaser, Patty's War is a great epic, spanning civilizations and generations and creating an intricate dance of cultures and worlds.

Miller has created a fascinating and intriguing alien race, with a rich history and culture so alive it jumps off the page.

A wonderful and enjoyable read, I'm only disappointed there isn't any more.

Freya gave Patty and Alan a head start when a passing asteroid slipped into Earth's gravity well. She knew her decision to run was the right one when a torrid battle in Low Earth Orbit revealed the aliens' true intentions.
Doesn't anyone talk anymore?

Friendly skies were gone, but being behind Freya's controls felt like the safest place in the universe.

Patty's Flight and Patty's War were originally conceived as one continuous narrative, one story not two. I've never been particularly happy about dividing the story into two parts to conform to the publishing industry's economic considerations.
That said, I'm pleased to present Freya's Flight - Patty's Flight and Patty's War, together in one volume.
As an added extra I have included 'Tina Tales', Tina's email messages to Patty from her refuge in Darwin, and appendices of the cast names and some notes about the alien language and clans.

Love that it’s set in space but also New Zealand and Australia. That’s a bit different. It's marketed as YA, but so was The Hunger Games! the only thing that really makes it YA in my mind is that there's no swearing or spicy bits in it. The story starts off quite simply (very easy reading) in a future where space flight is accessible to many, and humanity is facing an epic catastrophe, but it doesn't take long before the exciting story also develops in emotional complexity. There is also plenty of science to satisfy Sci fi lovers. The author has constructed a nuanced Alien world that is really unique and their story unfolds in parallel to Patty's and brings empathy to the trope of alien invasion. I think fiction like this helps us imagine solutions to our current problems. It’s not a comedy by any stretch but there are humorous moments and the authors warmth shines through the intelligent writing.

I don't normally review books. But I had to write this. Freya's Flight is a fantastic book. A perfect combination of Sci-Fi and adventure. Each time I pick the book up, I plan to read a chapter or two and end up finding it hard to stop reading.

Patty is a brilliant heroine. She jumps off the page and into your imagination. I've never read anyone quite like her. It's great to see such a wonderful heroic female lead.
