Narelle King has a background in environmental science, which has led to her stalking giant pandas through bamboo thickets in China, wandering around the Australian bush at night with an unreliable spotlight and living for six months in the middle of a zoo. On one occasion, she caused the evacuation of a university chemistry lab, which is why she now works with words rather than dangerous chemicals.

Whenever possible, Narelle escapes the real world by reading, writing or daydreaming about magic and monsters.

Narelle lives on Gundungurra land in the Blue Mountains, Australia, with her son and ninja cat.

Contemporary fantasy novel set in Australia. This is Australia, but not as you know it. Adrian Walker, a little known minister, has taken control of the government. As if that wasn't shocking enough, rumours swirl around Canberra about Walker's strange and shadowy backers. When the General Election is cancelled Amber Yu, along with thousands of other ordinary Australians, takes to the streets in protest. After sheltering a neighbour, Amber comes to the attention of the security forces and her infant son Ollie is taken as a hostage. Amber must now risk everything she has known and depended on as she and Bec, a friend from their university days, set out to rescue her son.The Bonehead Resistance is an epic chase from the leafy suburbs of North Sydney to the dusty outback of Dubbo, as Amber flees, fights and inspires her fellow Australians. This thrilling debut from Narelle King will have you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.

What a fantastic novel from a brand new writer! While the action is non-stop from the first chapter to the last, it doesn't come at the expense of character development or setting.
Amber, the main character, is an ordinary (or is she?) woman forced into heroism to save her child, reluctant to embrace the role thrust on her but propelled forward by her love for her son. She is the perfect foil for the insanity unfolding around her.
I love the uniqueness of this book, Australia is rarely used as a setting for contemporary fantasy and its a refreshing change. The writing evokes a real sense of place - you can feel the sticky, opressive heat of summer in Sydney and hear the unique birdsong of the Australian bush.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am looking forward seeing where this story goes next
