Shani Cossins - Author

Shani Cossins started writing stories from a very early age and her enthusiasm for storytelling quickly found an outlet in The Puffin Club, where she submitted a time-travel story that was published in the 1985 edition of Puffinalia.

During her school years, she wrote and produced plays, which sparked a lasting love for the performing arts. This creative path led her to a role in a documentary on tv and voice-over work for business training and amateur television as an adult. She later attended Swinburne University, where she earned a Diploma of Business, all while continuing to write short stories published in various science fiction fan magazines.

Her dedication to writing culminated in the release of a novella, The Master of Bentley Hall. While developing her debut novel, A Game of Masquerade, over several years, she also contributed a chapter to Boundaries, a fan-fiction novel based on the US gothic horror series Dark Shadows. This project gave her the opportunity to connect with fellow fans and share in a vibrant creative community.

With the release of her full-length novel, she was honoured with the prestigious Literary Titan Book Award. She now warmly invites readers to step into the shadowy streets of Whitechapel, London, in 1888, a setting as haunting as it is captivating. She is currently penning a murder mystery in progress plus another developing a third novel. Alongside her writing, she works full-time in the music and performing arts department of a school, where she enjoy fostering creativity and supporting students’ growth each day.

London, 1888. Jack the Ripper prowls Whitechapel, leaving fear and mutilated bodies in his wake. The city is gripped by terror, and Scotland Yard is powerless to stop him.

But in this reimagining of history, the killer’s identity is more shocking than anyone dares imagine. Professor Orlando Delbrotman is not of this world. A fugitive from another realm, he arrives in London only to be drawn into the nightmare stalking its streets. Possessing knowledge beyond human understanding, he must walk a fine line: solve the murders without altering history itself.

The deeper he investigates, the more he realises the Ripper may not be human at all, and that stopping him could tear time apart. What if Jack the Ripper was never truly human?

Blending historical accuracy with speculative imagination, A Game of Masquerade plunges readers into the gaslit alleys of Whitechapel, where poverty, prejudice, and paranoia feed the monster in the shadows.

With relentless suspense, vivid atmosphere, and a twist that redefines the Ripper legend, this is not just another historical thriller; it’s a revelation.
A chilling reimagining of the Jack the Ripper mystery.
The perfect fusion of true crime atmosphere and science fiction wonder.

This book immediately plunged me into the fog-choked, fear-stricken streets of 1888 East End. Then elevates you to the historical mystery into a pulse-pounding work of speculative fiction. The introduction of Professor Orlando Delbrotman—a brilliant, enigmatic fugitive from another world.
The author captured together the historical setting with elements of sci-fi and horror, revealing a monster forged by the twisted threads of past and future events. This is a must-read if you are a fan of historical mysteries, Victorian horror, and clever, high-concept sci-fi. It will make you look at the legend of Jack the Ripper in an entirely new, terrifying light. It certainly had that affect on me. Highly recommended!

A literary masterpiece where East End meets Dr Who vibes Wow! I have never read a book like this before! From the very first chapter, I was swept away. Shani Cossins captures 19th Century London so vividly I could almost smell the fog and hear the clatter of carriage wheels on cobblestones. This story twists the Jack the Ripper horror into something extraordinary, a thrilling blend of history and time travel with compelling characters and moral dilemmas.

By reframing one of the most infamous unsolved mysteries of the nineteenth century through a daring speculative lens the novel is at once haunting and imaginative, rooted in authentic social history while unafraid to venture into the fantastic. Readers intrigued by historical mysteries, speculative twists on true crime, or explorations of morality in the face of brutality will find this a compelling and thought-provoking read.
A bold and atmospheric fusion of history and science fiction, A Game of Masquerade is a chilling reimagining of Jack the Ripper that both unsettles and captivates. It is unreservedly recommended!
