Australia, 1937–1944 — A remote Outback town. A woman’s unbreakable will to survive.
When Frieda and her four children leave the city to follow her husband, Jack, to Cloncurry—a harsh and isolated town in Western Queensland—they dream of a better future. But the reality of life in the Outback is far from what Frieda imagined. Jack is consumed by his obsession with discovering a copper motherlode in the abandoned mines, a dream that blinds him to everything else, including his family’s needs.
As Frieda struggles to keep her children safe in a landscape of dust, heat, and hardship, tragedy and heartache begin to unfold. Her longing for stability clashes with Jack’s relentless ambitions, straining their marriage to the breaking point.
When the family is forced back to the city, Frieda uncovers Jack’s devastating secret—a betrayal that shatters her trust and transforms her love into bitterness. Her world is changed forever, and a fierce determination begins to take root.
With the outbreak of World War II, Frieda makes the bold decision to return to Cloncurry. But this time, the balance of power has shifted. No longer defined by Jack’s dreams, she is ready to forge her own destiny in a place that once tested her to her limits.
Jack’s Promises is a compelling true story of resilience, betrayal, and transformation. Set against the backdrop of the Great Depression and World War II, it follows one woman’s fight to protect her family and claim her independence in the unforgiving Australian Outback.
A gripping story of a family that lived in the Australian Outback during the Depression and WWII. It's not just a novel I couldn't put down, but a vivid description of life in the bush during the harshest of times in Australian history.
This story truly moved me. It follows a family living through the Depression and World War II in the Australian Outback, and it felt so real that I often forgot I was reading a novel. The struggles, the love, the heartbreak — it all came alive against the backdrop of that harsh, beautiful land. I could almost hear the wind through the gum trees and feel the dust on my skin. It’s not just a story about survival, but about strength, family, and the spirit of people who refused to give up. I finished it with tears in my eyes and a deep appreciation for a part of Australia’s history I’ll never forget.
